Urban Growth Theories and Settlement Systems of India

This book describes Prof. Shah Manzoor Alam’s lifelong and path breaking contribution to Urban Studies and System of Settlements in India, also influencing the processes of urbanization of West, South and East Asian countries. It explains as to how the primate cities are parasitical, retard rural-urban integration, distort the settlement system and prevent the emergence of a lognormal distribution of settlements in India. Besides highlighting household energy consumption, the papers highlight the policy issues regarding the demand and supply of energy in urban India and testify that geographers can contribute significantly to the understanding of the policy issues in planning and development of India.
